How To Organize Your Laundry Room

If you are like most of us, your laundry room can quickly go from a designated cleaning area to a storage place for muddy sneakers, pet beds, giveaways, and more. This can make the process of doing laundry chaotic and frustrating. However, by dedicating some time and effort to learning how to organize your laundry room — and keeping it that way — you can make doing laundry a less tedious (and maybe even enjoyable!) task. Below are our top seven tips on how to organize your laundry room once and for all.

1. Consider adding a countertop

One laundry room organizational tip that we love is adding a sleek countertop above your washer and dryer units. This will make the area above your washer and dryer much more functional, while also giving your laundry area a sleek and stylish appeal. You can build a waterfall countertop from plywood or opt for a simple butcher block to quickly make the space more inviting and usable.

2. Incorporate a sorting area

Another tip that will take your laundry room from chaos to order in a matter of minutes is adding three hampers for family members to presort their laundry. We suggest designating one hamper for whites, one for lights, and one for darks. Having your dirty laundry neatly sorted into attractive bins will cut down on clutter and also make the process of doing laundry quick and easy.

3. Dry your clothing wisely

Bulky drying racks can quickly clutter a laundry room. Instead, we recommend installing a drying bar where you can hang damp items without taking up as much space. Another idea we can’t get enough of is installing fold down drying racks that can be put away when not in use.

4. Utilize the back of your door

If your laundry room has a door you have a valuable storage area that is most likely untapped! You can install a behind-the-door rack to organize detergent, fabric softener and other supplies or add hooks to hang items like ironing boards, brooms, and dustpans.

5. Set up a designated “lost and found” basket

When doing laundry it is inevitable to come across loose change, socks with no mate, and a variety of other miscellaneous items. This is especially true if you are doing laundry for a large family. To avoid cluttering your laundry room while waiting for the item in question to be returned to its owner, we suggest creating a designated basket or container for odds and ends. This will keep the area neat and tidy and also creates a clear space where family members know to look for missing items.

6. Outsource the hard work

By doing less of the work that you dislike, your mind is free to spend more energy on organizing your laundry room. Dropping your laundry off at a wash, dry, fold service will put precious hours back into your week by handing off the time-consuming task of washing, drying, and folding laundry. Simply drop off your laundry and pick it up later, washed, dried, and folded! It doesn’t get any easier than this!

7. Hang a laundry sorting chart

Most of us have experienced a load of laundry gone terribly wrong. Whether this means a load of whites getting mixed in with brightly colored linens or a pair of your favorite jeans being shrunk beyond recognition, you can easily avoid these mistakes by hanging a laundry sorting guide above your washing machine. This is an especially good idea if you are training your children to help out with the laundry process.

8. Install a pegboard

One easy way to maximize storage in a small space is to install a pegboard on your wall. This will allow you to hang up items like drying racks, irons, ironing boards, and brooms, that would otherwise clutter a tight space.

As you can see, you don’t need a spacious laundry room or an enormous budget to make your laundry room an inviting space that you actually want to use. By following the above tips on how to organize your laundry room you can easily create a peaceful organized area that makes you look forward to doing laundry.
